Chapter 10

PATREKILGAR

He had never spent sweeter hours than the ones watching Maja sleep on his chest, curled up and snoring like a djumjum. The joy of her acceptance spread over him like butter melting on the flesh of a roasted carra root, soaking into his fibers, richening his blood.

His eyes roamed the water-stained ceiling as his thoughts roamed the forests, imagining their life ahead. Foraging for fruit together, making their nest. Staying in it all day and night and finding new ways that their bodies fit together. He’d make his den comfortable for Maja, dig her a pool for bathing and finish the snug side passages to house the injured wildlife she’d surely take in to nurture back to health.

For such a tiny species, she had a huge heart. She was intelligent, too, and brave. Nearly fearless when she’d met him—fearless in the face of a Skarr! And so open and kind, so trusting of him despite all she’d been through. So worshipful of his brutish body. Corek, he was lucky to find his mate.

His mate. His mate. He still couldn’t believe it.

But when the light of day pierced the tiny room and the gharial rose from her box, stretching her legs and wings with one beady eye always on Patrek, he was faced with a bitter reality. They still had to escape the city, and it wouldn’t be easy.

He stroked Maja’s cheek with the tip of his thumb until she blinked awake, a smile spreading over her face like the dawn when her eyes finally focused on him.

“You’re really here,” she murmured, nuzzling into his plates. “I was afraid I dreamed you. It happened, though, didn’t it? All of it? I didn’t make it up?”

“No,” he chuckled, and then laughed again when she clambered up to pepper his face with tiny, fluttering kisses. When they deepened and she sighed against his mouth, her fresh arousal invading his nostrils and addling his thoughts, he had to pull back with a groan. “I wish. But we have some less pleasant tasks to complete while the day lasts.”

Maja nodded and slid down to the floor. She pulled on her discarded nightshift and asked, “Are you hungry?”

His guts rumbled to answer her question, and she brightened, producing a half-empty box of cheap ration bars from the cupboard. He could smell their vile manufactured proteins through the wrappers. Patrek shook his head as he pulled up his trousers and banished his already unmanageable cock inside them. “I can’t digest those, unfortunately.”

Something like shame washed her face as she opened one for herself. “Carra can’t either. I’ll get you something better when I go out to the butcher for her. What do you like to eat?”

“Most plant foods are agreeable, but don’t trouble yourself. Skarr biology is such that we can go some time without food. How often do you eat?” He should know these things, if he was going to be a good mate to her.

“Once or twice a day at least.” She made a face as she chewed her bar.
